TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE

Transport

Transport and communications account for the biggest share of the gross regional product - 18.5%.

The Region’s transport system includes an extensive network of railways and highways, seaports, inland waterways, airports, port terminals, and oil and gas pipelines.

Roads in the area extend over 27,000 km, including 10,200 km of roads in public use.

There are 2,100 km. of railway lines.

The main freight flow is directed to the region’s seaports. The principal cargoes are crude oil, petroleum products, timber, chemical fertiliser, grain, sugar, cement and building cargoes.

Krasnodar and Sochi have international airports. An airport is to open in Gelendzhik in 2007.

There are eight seaports: Novorossiysk, Tuapse, YYeisk, Temryuk, Kavkaz, Sochi, Anapa and Gelendzhik, and a river port in Krasnodar. These account for up to 40% of the freight handled at all Russian ports. The biggest shipping company is OAO Novorossiysk Marine Shipping Line. In 2006, the seaports processed 117.9 million metric tons of foreign trade cargoes.

The 10,000 km. of long-distance pipelines include export pipelines run by OAO Chernomortransneft, which is owned by OAO Transneft, and two international facilities: ZAO Caspian Pipeline Consortium and the Russia-Turkey Gas Pipeline.

The transport sector accounts for nearly 15% of the gross regional product. In 2005, it rendered 106.2 billion roubles worth of services, carried 362 million metric tons of freight and 454 million passengers.

Communications

Communications are the most promising and dynamic infrastructure sector in the Krasnodar Territory, with a potential for long-term economic growth. All kinds of communications are developing rapidly.

The territory has a full and expanding range of communications services of increasing quality. In 2006, the volume of services in the sector topped 22.8 billion roubles, a 3.9-fold growth over 2000.

In electrical communications, equipment replacement and increased coverage by mobile phone networks have contributed to one of the highest levels of digitalisation in Russia -- 74.5%. There are 8 million telephone subscribers, including 6.8 million mobile phones and 1.2 million landlines. The mobile communications penetration level exceeds 130%. There are six mobile operators in the Kuban Area: OAO MTS, ZAO Mobicom Kavkaz (Megaphone trade mark), OAO VympelCom (Beeline trade mark), OOO Telecom Eurasia (SMARTS trade mark), OAO Krasnodar Mobile Communications and OOO Kubtelecom. Four operators use the GSM standard and two use CDMA-2000 and CDMA-800 (IS-95), respectively.

The services rendered in 2005 were worth 19.3 billion roubles, 5.4 times greater than in 2000.
