The Krasnodar Academic Theatre of Drama is already over 100 years old. The repertoire of the theatre includes the works of Shakespeare and Lope de Vega, Pushkin and Gogol, Chekhov and Bulgakov, as well as plays by modern playwrights. Every day Krasnodar residents and guests of the city are delighted by colourful productions of musical, puppet and youth theatres and conservatories. On the stages of the town international, Russian and regional competitions and festivals are carried out.

In the Krasnodar Municipal Concert Hall it is possible to hear live organ and chamber music performed by world class stars. The name of Vladimir Ponkin, the senior conductor of the Kuban Simphony Orchestra is known to music lovers in Europe, America, Australia, Africa and Japan. This outstanding maestro, able to transform a classic symphonic concert into a real show, conducted the orchestra of the BBC, the Milan Symphony, and the orchestra of Radio Stockholm. His mastery in its time was highly rated by Pope John Paul II and the Dalai Lama.

The famous Krasnodar Jazz orchestra is led by the distinguished musician, composer and conductor Georgii Garanyan. Previously he played the saxophone in the cult orchestra of Oleg Lundstrem, and today he is head conductor of this group and a winner of international festivals in Prague, Mumbai, Havana, Warsaw, Finland. The Krasnodar Big Band of Georgii Garanyan is one of the best jazz groups in Russia. The unique sound of this orchestra, and the magnificent arrangements created by his team, win over the most exacting audience; in concerts the group always plays to full houses. The orchestra actively participates in international jazz festivals and triumphantly performs the hits of Gershwin, Miller and Ellington.

The Krasnodar Ballet Theatre is headed by Yurii Grigorovich, the outstanding world famous Russian ballet master. ‘A genius of the kind that is born only once every thousand years,’ is exactly how people talk about the famous choreographer, who has his own style and unique talent. Over sixty years of artistic work Yurii Grigorovich has put on numerous spectacles on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre and on the stages of the leading theatres of the world. The brilliant choreographer heads the jury of the largest international competition of ballet dancers and is the face of the Russian school of choreography. Today the Krasnodar Ballet Theatre of Yurii Grigorovich tours in many countries around the world and consists of almost 100 people. The organised theatre manages the Artistic Union Premiera under the leadership of the famous producer and director Leonard Gatov, who more than ten years ago invited the great master to Krasnodar and gave his cooperation in the creation of the theatre. Over this time original productions by Grigorovich - Spartak, Golden Century, Stone Flower, Romeo and Juliette, the Nutcracker have been performed, as well as masterpieces of the past under his direction: Raimonda, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, the Corsair. In the words of the ballet master himself, he is very proud of the Krasnodar Ballet Theatre. It is under his patronage in Krasnodar the first all Russian competition Young Ballet of Russia is carried out.

At the beginning of this year the great master celebrated his 80th birthday, in honour of which a full artistic programme was held with participation by ballet stars in Krasnodar and on the new stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. The high point of the celebration was the gala evening at Covent Garden in London.

The Kuban Cossack Choir is the oldest professional national group in Russia, founded in 1811. The Cossacks were Orthodox workers of the land, charged with defending the southern borders of the State of Russia. Their faith, moral ideals, heroism and feeling for collective power gave birth to great sounds and rhythmic dances. The ancient traditions are carefully preserved and make up the huge repertoire of the Kuban Cossack Choir. The world famous group is a cause for pride, the symbol of all the culture of Krasnodar Krai. A concert by the Kuban Cossack Choir is not just a concert, it is a grandiose spectacle. Impassioned songs, the fast-moving fiery dances take the breath away and infect the audience with their energetic action. The unbelievable tricks in performance Cossacks express their colourful temperament and passionate independent character. Under the leadership of their permanent leader and composer Viktor Zakharchenko the Kuban Cossack Choir with great success tours all over the world and is the keeper of the historical memory of the Cossack nation.

In the Krai there are 48 state and municipal museums, more than 100 folk, community and institutional museums and picture galleries. Their collections preserve and display approximately one million genuine articles of history, culture, nature, and the arts. These include unique collections of ancient decorative applied arts, Russian and foreign fine arts, historical relics, memorial collections of notable figures from Russia and Krasnodar Krai. Every year the museums in the Krai are visited by 1.6 to 1.7 million local people and visitors to the Krai. Employees of the museums annually carry out about forty thousand tours, more than four thousand lectures, and about two thousand large events. There are permanent displays from their own collections as well as from the collections of museums in other regions of Russia and private collections. Work on the collections and exhibitions of the museums of Krasnodar Krai is displayed with great success at the most prestigious sites in Russia and the museums take part in the largest world projects.
